Immigration to New Zealand with brother Jonas
Of her 11 siblings, Jonas was important in Eliza’s life because they migrated to New Zealand together when she was 17 years old.
Jonas Lockett was born on 15 September 1816 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was baptized on 16 February 1817 at Chorlton-upon-Medlock.
Jonas married Agnes Williams (1816-1848) on 27 October 1836 in the parish of St Bride’s, Fleet Street, London.
On 18 September 1840, aged 17, Eliza, her brother Jonas and sister-in-law, Agnes, sailed on the ship Slains Castle from Deal, England, arriving in Port Nicholson on 25 January 1941. Eliza was listed in the ship records as a seamstress. Jonas Lockett was listed as a boot and shoemaker, his wife Ann (Agnes) and their infant daughter who died off the coast of Gravesend at sea.
Jonas and Ann Lockett settled in Wanganui, living in Victoria Avenue. On 1 August 1842, Jonas advertised the opening of Victoria Inn, in Wanganui. His occupation was variously described as tidewaiter and sawyer. Between 1859 and 1874, Jonas was employed as a Locker, in HMS Customs, Wanganui, Wellington.
Agnes Lockett died in 1848. In 1861, Jonas married Catherine Mary Adam in Wanganui, when he was 45 years old. Jonas died in October 1879 when he was 63 years old.
